»» About The 451 Group: Background on the Name

Four hundred fifty-one degrees Fahrenheit is the temperature at which paper burns. Ray Bradbury's 1953 novel 'Fahrenheit 451' describes a dystopia where information is censored through the destruction of books. In order to perpetuate freedom of thought, the protagonists take decisive action to subvert this process.

The 451 Group does not claim that the technology industry's information channels are controlled by an authoritarian regime; however, economic forces and market dynamics have combined to undermine the imperative for delivering compelling, timely and convergent analytic insights into the business of enterprise IT innovation.

Independence is a scarce commodity these days. The 451 Group is working to change this.

The company chose the name '451' because it sees an analogy between a world that burns books and a world in which the imperatives of objective and insightful research are subverted by those of pay-for-play propaganda.

By applying skepticism, vigorous research and unrelenting scrutiny, 451 analysts are able to deliver to clients at vendor, investor, services and end-user organizations the independent and critical perspectives on emerging enterprise information technologies that are necessary to make complex yet successful business and investment decisions.
