The Unbound Office
To understand the context for recent developments in the mobile technology market, one needs to look back six years to when Research in Motion (RIM) introduced its first viable mobile email and mobile office service. It leveraged what has proved to be its enormously successful BlackBerry line of devices. Growth in enterprise subscribers came slowly yet regularly – enough so that the market encouraged a variety of vendors to spring up in an attempt to grab a share. Visto and the recently acquired Good Technology scored close to half a billion dollars in combined funding to target the opportunity. Others have grown with more modest means, and at least three vendors are now taking an open source approach to their platforms.
In 2005 The 451 Group noted in its research the first truly significant growth in enterprise subscribers for email services. RIM continues to lead the way here – that much is clear. What isn't clear is whether there will be any pure plays left standing in the space once the dust settles.
This report is intended to address that question by taking a close look at the vendors in the space and at what enterprise users themselves are thinking in terms of how the market will continue to develop, as well as what factors are driving deployment.
