Desktops as a Service
The world of work is changing. More and more people work at Windows desktops, analyzing data sets, looking for the wheat among the chaff. Their workspaces need to be managed and kept up-to-date, but their custom settings need to be unaffected when the underlying OS and applications change. The cost of maintaining these workspaces goes up and up, as IT department budgets remain flat or decline. It’s no wonder that Windows desktop administrators are looking at their colleagues in server virtualization, and applying the same techniques to simplifying management of desktops. Virtualization makes it possible to treat the Windows desktop like any other IT service – to manage it efficiently and provision it automatically.
What everyone would really like, though, is to hand over all this complexity to a trusted partner that is able to achieve economies of scale. The stage is set for the debut of desktops as a service. This report examines the desktops-as-a-service space, including the market background and drivers. It also includes customer survey data, user case studies and profiles of both public and private vendors.
