Traditional tools for application, infrastructure and operations management, security and compliance have been hard to learn and hard to use. A search interface helps in large part because of its open-endedness. Search lets operators follow their own intuition and refine questions based on the results of previous, more coarse-grained questions. However, when IT management vendors wanted to add search to their tools, they ended up building the same platforms over and over again. What’s needed, it turns out, is an open source, standard approach to distributing an pre-processing massive data sets for search.

Enter Hadoop. Hadoop, by distributing what is often business-critical data, monetizes x86 boxes as effectively as they can be monetized, while eliminating data bottlenecks and single points of failure. It makes enterprise infrastructure more Google-like. This report is a preliminary survey of this new terrain. It explores the data that is flowing out of IT infrastructure, and examines the new infrastructure platforms that are emerging to manage distributed data. Included are profiles of search vendors, as well as Map Reduce/ Hadoop vendors. The report also presents end-user survey data and case studies.
