Report Fifteen: Grid computing – Adoption in the healthcare market

While companies in the financial sector, and specifically investment banks, are leading the way in using and moving beyond grid technology, there has always been much interest in grids in the healthcare sector – albeit with less-than-stellar commercial traction for grid technologies in this sector. Hospitals are seen as natural candidates for grid technology, given their requirements for sharing data and the specific challenges around storage and medical images. Research and governmental initiatives around grid technology for medical and healthcare purposes have been an important element of grid usage from the early prototypes of finding cures for diseases using spare cycles on PCs. There are now far more ambitious programs in place to explore the opportunity for using grids as the backbone for electronic health records and new medical infrastructures. Money from both the European Union and the US government has been pointed in this direction, and this report looks at the success and future developments in such initiatives.
