The convergence of network management and application management: identifying marketplace opportunities when worlds collide

An emerging enterprise IT industry summit

Presented by The 451 Group
Wednesday, August 11, 2004, 8:00am-11:30am PDT
Sheraton Palo Alto Hotel, Palo Alto, CA

Event focus

The 451 Group is hosting an industry summit on the emerging market for converged application and network management technologies. This exclusive, invitation-only summit coincides with the upcoming release of the Group's latest 451 Special Report – 'When Worlds Collide' – which provides 200+ pages of insight into new market opportunities resulting from this convergence, as well as competitive assessments of dozens of vendors focusing on this space and case studies of major early-adopter customer deployments of converged application and network management frameworks and tools.

The summit on August 11 will bring together key industry leaders to discuss marketplace opportunities as the application management and network management worlds 'collide,' considering this evolution within the context of the report's findings.

CIOs have a serious headache. When applications run slowly, application operators blame the network, and network operators blame the application. With distributed applications becoming increasingly critical to a business's bottom line, the time wasted in finger-pointing adds to the already heavy cost of downtime. But network management and application management are different worlds. Can they be brought together, and will anyone benefit?

The 451 Group believes these worlds are set to collide. In fact, convergence between network management and application management platforms is already under way through both an internal development process and ongoing merger and acquisition activity, which has totaled more than $2bn in the past two years. Well-established network management firms are eager to extend their reach up into the application layer, while the comparatively young application management companies are seeking partners or buyers to ensure end-to-end management.

In the report, 451 analysts have identified the most compelling segments of activity and, subsequently, the most compelling vendors within these segments. The result is a gap analysis, identifying market opportunities that should direct future product deployment and vendor competition, as well as the subsequent positioning, investment opportunities and marketplace M&A that will ensue.

The summit will highlight these findings and focus on the new market opportunities for vendors that The 451 Group believes will emerge. The summit will also provide a forum for contextual, executive-level discussion on the specifics of this technology evolution – examining the changing information technology requirements and capabilities that are enabling this marketplace, the competitive environment for vendors at all stages of development, and growth-stage investment opportunities in this space.

Format

The program is divided into three parts. First, 451 Senior Analysts Rachel Chalmers of the Enterprise Software sector and Max Smetannikov of the Networks & Media sector will present findings from the 451 Special Report, 'When Worlds Collide.' Then these analysts will lead an industry panel discussion of this convergence (see below). Finally, there will be an opportunity for executive-level discussion among the audience and the panelists on the future of this market space.
