John Abbott
Chief Analyst |
John covers the systems and storage industries for The 451 Group, and over a 20-year career has pioneered specialist technology coverage in such areas as Unix, advanced graphics, high-performance chip technologies, system architectures, software development and storage technologies.
One of the founding members of the company in October 1999, John directs the daily analysis service from the San Francisco office. He covers storage, operating systems and software development tools. He was a lead author on the 'Storage virtualization: bonanza or banana skin?' and 'Blade servers: Thin is in' Special Reports from The 451 Group, the first comprehensive survey of either subject to be published. He chaired a number of sessions at the 2002 Server Blade Summit in San Jose.
John began covering the technology sector in 1984, after several years of direct involvement with computer technology at organizations such as Macmillan Publishing, architecture firm Scott, Brownrigg and Turner, and UK music rights administration body The Performing Right Society. His experience in these positions ranged from working with IBM and ICL mainframes, pre-IBM desktop systems, and some of the earliest Unix workstations and servers. John also spent a year as a technical author at software house Optichrome Computer Systems Ltd, documenting a Unix-based management information system.
As a journalist, John worked on various trade and technical publications from 1984-86 before becoming a freelancer. During this time, he contributed to UK publications including Computing, Computer Weekly, Datalink, The Financial Times, The Times and the Computer Users Yearbook. In 1987, he was appointed Editor of the weekly Unix newsletter Unigram.X, and later became Editor of the daily Computergram International. He was the founding editor of Advanced Graphics Magazine, Unix News and D3, a magazine for software developers.
John has a BA in Music and an MA in Modern English Literature from the University of London.
